Example Forecast 03/01/15 – 04/01/15 – Friday Version......

PRESSURE SYNOPSIS

Saturday will still see a big area of High pressure off the Portuguese Coast in the near Portuguese Atlantic at 1036 to 1040 millibars, there will also be a weaker (but still big) High pressure over South Eastern England at 1013 millibars at Midday, but this latter High will be moving Eastwards into North Eastern Europe. The Low pressures to counter all this High action will be all Northern based, with a big one over Western Russia at 962 millibars, covering an immense area, stretching into the North Sea. With another around the Northern Scandinavian Coast in the Norwegian Sea at 975 millibars. Meanwhile two new Low pressures will swing round Southern Greenland, with the first one of about 1001 millibars heading across the North Atlantic in the direction of Scotland. It will be followed by another fat Low of 999 millibars heading towards the Denmark Strait. Finally a third Low will come out of North America at 987 millibars, which will push the Atlantic Low pressures Easterly. Sunday will see the Portuguese High still off the Coast at 1037 millibars, and it will still cover a big area, having splintered off another clone into North eastern Europe which will be about 1037 millibars. This block of High pressure will stop the mostly Northern based Low pressures from getting in, and concentrate them into one mass, as they get caught-up in an almost standstill by the block of High pressure. So by Midday there will be two Low pressures. Both around 970 millibars off the Coast of Greenland (there is a chance that they could form one entity of 98 millibars, but this is still unclear), either way they will radiate swell towards us, and under the High pressure to some degree. Make sure you read the details and your areas to make the most of what there is.......

OVERALL

Eastern Scotland throughout, the East Coast on Sunday. Followed by the South West and Wales on Sunday – those appear to be the best options. Good hunting wherever you go.....

BEGINNERS / IMPROVERS

Wales is your best option overall, then the South West on Sunday. But the South West will be a bit too big for you in general (with the exception of Devon of course which will be a smaller of course), so sheltered spots would be best for you to learn and improve. Good hunting wherever you go..............

It should be remembered

It should be remembered:

  • Regardless of the Weekend Outlook if there is surf, you should be out there to improve your surfing ability
  • so unless it’s flat, just ignore it(!) and go surfing.
  • The Weekend Outlook is aimed at those who are competent at paddling out in 6ft plus surf and looking for perfect conditions.
  • This is a SURF report, we care about the waves, as to whether it is sunny, rainy, snowy or hailing is incidental, and neither here nor there as far as we are concerned.
  • Also note that this is always written for midday, so there may be variances during the AM and PM.
  • Wave Heights are written in what you are actually taking in the face / duck diving, we are not into macho bs of measuring the wave from the back, this is the real thing, what you drop and ride = simple.
